Oil Spills
"Although they are rare, primary sources of oil spills occur when large oil tankers collide or are leaking. On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez struck a reef in the Prince William Sound, Alaska. A sound is a large ocean inlet, larger and more open than a bay. Approximately 38,500 tons of oil spilled into the sea. The oil spill ultimately covered more than 1,200 miles. This one incident was responsible for the death of more than 300,000 seabirds, 5,000 sea otters, and 300 harbor seals."
